You think English is easy???

Can you read these right the first time?

1) The bandage was wound around the wound.

2) The farm was used to produce produce.

3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.

4) We must polish the Polish furniture.

5) He could lead if he would get the lead out.

6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.

7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present .

8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.

9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

10) I did not object to the object.

11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid.

12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.

13) They were too close to the door to close it.

14) The buck does funny things when the does are present.

15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.

16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow..

17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail.

18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.

19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.

20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

Let’s face it – English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren’t invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn’t the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn’t it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?
If teachers taught, why didn’t preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

PS. – Why doesn’t ‘Buick’ rhyme with ‘quick’?

You lovers of the English language might enjoy this .

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is ‘UP.’

It’s easy to understand UP , meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?

We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car . At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing. A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don’t give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP .

When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP.

When it doesn’t rain for awhile, things dry UP .

One could go on and on, but I’ll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, so……… Time to shut UP !

Oh… one more thing:

What is the first thing you do in the morning & the last thing you do at night? U-P

When you are in light, everything will follow you !! But when you enter dark, even your own shadow will leave you …… This is LIFE…..

Confidence with correct BODY LANGUAGE.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words; now picture yourself, approaching a woman or a prospective client, walking into a board meeting or a party. How do you look? What message do you communicate the moment you walk into a room? What are your eyes, hands and shoulders saying? What information can people gather about you before you ever say a word? Never thought about it? You should. And you can start by perusing our top 10 tips to show confidence with body language. People read your body language, often via instinct and without thinking. It’s because our poses and postures are a great source of information. They reflect our mood and our confidence level. We stand and walk a certain way when we’re confident and another way when we’re nervous. In a glance, most people can discern if we’re apprehensive or outgoing, relaxed or aggressive. With a little practice, we can learn the tips to show confidence through body language so that we always appear confident, capable and ready.

1: Avoid your pockets

The first tip on our list of the top 10 tips to show confidence with body language is to keep your hands out of your pockets. We put our hands in our pockets when we’re uncomfortable or unsure of ourselves. And as long as you have your hands stuffed down your pants, that’s how other people will view you.

Instinctually we tend to hide our hands when we’re nervous; keeping your hands out in the open indicates confidence and shows people you have nothing to hide. Also, recognize that putting your hands in your pockets encourages slouching, which isn’t good. As an alternative, try putting your hands on your hips; it’s a far more confident posture.

2: Don’t fidget

Fidgeting is a clear sign of nervousness. A man who can’t keep still, is a man who is worried, tense and certainly not confident. Your hands can be your worst enemies — fight to keep them still and steady. You can definitely talk with your hands, but keep your gesticulations calm and under control. Also, when seated, avoid that rapid leg-vibration thing that some guys do (you don’t want to look like a dog getting his belly rubbed).

3: Keep your eyes forward

Keeping your eyes level might be one of the trickiest ways to show confidence in body language. When you’re walking anywhere by yourself, it often feels natural to lower your head slightly and watch your step, but this posture communicates to others that you don’t want to engage in conversation or interact. And if you’re not careful, you might get into the habit of doing it all the time. Keep your chin up and your eyes forward, even when you’re walking down the street by yourself.

4: Stand up straight with your shoulders back

Standing up straight is one of the most important of our top 10 tips to project confidence through body language. It can be a challenge especially if you’ve been a sloucher all your life, but get over it. Standing up straight is perhaps the most important means of communicating confidence. Concentrate on pushing your shoulders back slightly when standing and walking. Nothing major, just a little. That one simple motion does wonders for your posture. Try it in front of the mirror — you’ll be surprised how much more confident it makes you look.

5: Take wide steps

A confident man will never be described as “scurrying,” “creeping” or “sneaking,” so pay attention to the way you walk. If you want to show confidence with body language you want to take large steps. Wide steps make you seem purposeful and suggest a personal tranquility, which denotes confidence in men.

6: Firm handshakes

Another of our top 10 tips for showing confidence with body language has to do with the firm handshake. There are few things worse than reaching out your hand during an introduction and getting a palm full of dead fish. Don’t be that guy. Instead, grip the other person’s hand firmly and confidently. If shaking hands with someone you’ve already met, you might even consider the two-hand grab: placing your free hand on the other person’s elbow adds warmth and enthusiasm to the handshake. Just don’t get carried away. A handshake is not a contest. Don’t try to crush the other person’s hand and don’t hold on too long.

7: Proper grooming

Imagine yourself walking into a room, maybe there are lots of beautiful women there or maybe the room is filled with respected colleagues. Now consider your appearance: four days’ worth of scruff, bad skin, hair crispy and pointy like a Backstreet Boy’s. The point we’re trying to make is that grooming is an essential component of communicating confidence through body language. You want your hair, face and even your smell to work for you, not against you. Don’t be afraid to experiment with new products to find the ones that work for you.

8: Smile

Confident people smile because they have nothing to worry about. Try this as an experiment: smile at someone as you pass them on the street or walking around the office. Chances are good that they’ll smile back. Now wouldn’t you like to have that effect on people all the time?

9: Don’t cross your arms when socializing

Crossing your arms is a protective posture. We do it when we’re cold, nervous or on guard. Think of those big, burly nightclub bouncers, crossing their 26-inch pythons while standing guard at the door to a club. Do they look like guys you want to talk to, joke with or work with? No, right? Their job is to look intimidating. Your job is to look likeable, open and confident. So relax a little and keep your arms uncrossed.

10: Use contact to show appreciation

The pat on the back is a lost art. Don’t be afraid to pat a buddy or a colleague on the back when he or she delivers a perfectly timed punch line or nails the big presentation. Most people aren’t freaked out by a hand on the shoulder and they’ll likely be appreciative of your sign of affection and respect.

is thought-activity whichcauses these changes.Intense passion, hatred, long-standing bitter jealousy, corroding anxiety, fits of hot temperactually destroy the cells of the body and induce diseases of the heart, liver, kidneys, spleen andstomach. It is a point worthy to note with care that every cell in the body suffers or grows, receivesa life impulse or a death impulse, from every thought that enters the mind, for you tend to growinto the image of that which you think about most. When the mind is turned to a particular thought and dwells on it, a definite vibration ofmatter is set up and often, more of this vibration is caused, the more does it tend to repeat itselfto become a habit, to become automatic. The body follows the mind and imitates its changes. Ifyou concentrate your thought the eyes become fixed.

Thought Power Creates Environments

It is often said that man is the result of his environmental forces. This is not true. Wecannot believe this, because the facts always prove the contrary. Many of the world’s greatestmen have been born in poverty and in adverse circumstances. Many who have been born in the slums and filthy surroundings have risen to the higheststatus in the world. They have won laurels of fame and distinguished themselves in politics, literature and poetry. They have become brilliant geniuses and beacon-lights of the world. Howdo you account for this?Sri T. Mutthuswamy Aiyar, the first Indian High Court Judge in Madras was born inabsolute poverty. He had to study at night under municipal lanterns. He had not sufficient food.He was clad in rags. He struggled hard and achieved greatness. He rose above the environmentalforces by his strong will-power and iron-determination.In the West, sons of cobblers and fishermen have risen to very high position. Boys whodid polishing of boots in the streets and who were selling beer in bars and were cooking in hotelshave become famous poets and able journalists.Johnson was placed in quite adverse environments. Goldsmith was “passing rich with 40pounds a year.” Sir Walter Scott was very poor. He had no place to live in. The life of JamesRamsay Macdonald is worth mentioning. He was a man of great Purushartha. He rose frompoverty to power—from the field of labour to the status of Prime Minister of Britain. His first jobwas addressing envelopes for 10 Shillings a week.He was too poor to buy tea; so he drank water instead. His main meal every day formonths was a three-penny beef-steak pudding. He was a pupil-teacher. He took great interest inPolitics and Science. He was a journalist. He gradually through right exertion (Purushartha) roseto the position of a Prime Minister.Sri Sankaracharya, the exponent of Advaita philosophy, a spiritual giant and a brilliantgenius was born in poor, unfavourable environments and circumstances. There are thousand andone instances like these. It is quite obvious, therefore, that unfavourable environments cannotannihilate the potential greatness and excellence of the future geniuses and that one can outgrow

environments by diligent application, patience, perseverance, truthfulness, honesty, integrity, sincerity of purpose, iron-will and strong determination.

Every man is born with his Samskaras. The mind is not a tabula rasa or a blank sheet ofpaper. It contains the impressions of thoughts and actions of the previous births. Samskaras arethe latent potentialities. These good Samskaras are valuable assets for man. Even though he isplaced in unfavourable environments, these Samskaras give him protection from extraneous, undesirable, hostile influences. They help his growth and evolution.Miss not any opportunity. Avail yourself of all opportunities. Every opportunity is meantfor your uplift and development. If you see a sick man lying down on the roadside in a helplesscondition, take him on your shoulders or vehicle to the nearest hospital. Nurse him. Give him hotmilk or tea or coffee. Shampoo his legs with Divine Bhava.Feel the all-pervading, all-permeating, interpenetrating indwelling God in him. Seedivinity in the glow in his eyes, in his cry, in his breath, in his pulsation and motion of his lungs.God has given this opportunity for you to develop mercy and love, to purify your heartand to remove Ghrina, hatred and jealousy. Sometimes if you are very timid, God will place youin such circumstances wherein you will be forced to exhibit courage and presence of mind byrisking your life. These world figures who have risen to eminence have utilized all opportunitiesto the best advantage. God shapes the minds of human beings by giving them opportunities.Remember that in your weakness lies the strength, because you will be always on youralert to safeguard yourself. Poverty has got its own virtues. Poverty infuses humility, strength, power of endurance and luxury begets laziness, pride, weakness, inertia and all sorts of evilhabits.Do not grumble, therefore, of bad environments. Create your own mental world andenvironments. That man who tries to evolve or grow in adverse environments will be a verystrong man indeed. Nothing can shake him. He will be of a sterner stuff. He will have strongnerves.

Man is certainly not a creature of environments or circumstances. He can control andmodify them by his capacities, character, thoughts, good actions and right exertion (Purushartha).Tivra (intense) Purushartha can change the destiny. That is the reason why Vasishtha andBhishma have placed Purushartha above destiny. Therefore, dear brothers! Exert. Conquer natureand rejoice in the eternal Satchidananda Atman.

Shilpy Sinha / Mumbai September 10, 2009, 0:11 IST

Last month, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (Irda) announced a slew of measures to make unit-linked insurance plans (Ulips) more attractive for policyholders from October 1.

These included capping the difference between net and gross yields at 3 per cent, limiting fund management charges at 1.35 per cent and withdrawing the surrender charge for exits after four years.

“Earlier, in the absence of any guidelines on the illustration shown at the point of sale, insurers used to charge according to their expenses. As a result, policyholders were unaware of the different costs,” said a senior executive of Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India. With these changes, the regulator has made Ulips more attractive.

However, policyholders will have to stay invested for the entire period of the scheme to get these benefits.

Let’s see how the changes will work. From October 1, insurers will give a benefit illustration of net and gross yields at 7 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively, as against an illustration of 6 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively, at present.

Therefore, the yield for policyholders has risen 1 per cent. To manage this, insurers will have to control their distributor/agent costs and fund management fees.

Further, by withdrawing surrender charges from fifth year onwards, Irda has given policyholders an option to exit if they are unhappy with the insurer or need funds.

If a policyholder wants to exit in the interim period of the policy term, he should remember that he will not be able to take advantage of the new guidelines.

“If an investor withdraws partially, does not pay the premium on time or switches funds frequently, he will not get good returns.” said GLN Sarma, chief actuary, Bharti Axa Life Insurance Company.

According to him, Ulips do not come with guarantees. Also, returns are totally dependent on the performance of the fund. And while policyholders are allowed three to four free switches between various fund options (which include various combinations of debt and equity), moving your money too often can hit returns. And while 10 per cent of the gross yield has to give net returns of 7 per cent, according to the new guidelines, any improvement in performance may not lead to an exact 3 per cent differential. This is because the fund management fees may go up in case the scheme performs better. So, a 15 per cent gross yield could mean 10-11 per cent returns.

The main benefit will be an increase in corpus. “While the new guidelines may not guarantee any substantial hike in returns, they will definitely increase the investible amount and possibly the returns as well,” said the LIC executive.

But remember, it will be over a long period. This is because of the high costs involved in the initial years. And there are good chances that many of these, like distributor/agent cost, will continue to remain high.

But after third or fourth year, these costs will fall substantially, leading to a higher investible corpus. This, in turn, will lead to increase in returns. That is, what an investor loses out in the initial years will be made up to ensure that the difference between gross and net yields is 3 per cent.

A person who wishes to exit after the initial four years stands to lose. This is because most of the premium in these years will go towards premium allocation charges and other costs.

Reinsurance is an international business or in the case of NRI investors opting for insurance. Whenever there is movement of money across the national borders, there is the added problem of the exchange rate risk. The insurer has to take account of this risk and the cost of managing it has to be added with the premium.
